Not at all. Burlaouen is a peaceful rural hideaway surrounded by nature. It's incredibly quiet at night.
Can non-riders come too?
Absolutely. While we cater heavily to bikers, nature lovers, hikers, and couples looking for a quiet break love it here just as much.
Can I stay for just one night?
Availability and minimum stays can vary by season. Please message us on WhatsApp with your dates to check.
Are children allowed?
Yes, families are welcome. The Wooden House and Stone Gîte have plenty of space for families.
Do you allow pets?
Please contact us prior to booking to discuss bringing pets, as it depends on the specific accommodation and time of year.
Is there Wi-Fi available?
Yes, there is Wi-Fi available, though being a rural location, it's best for basic browsing and route planning rather than heavy streaming.
Will my mobile phone have a signal?
Most major networks get a signal here, but coverage can sometimes be patchy in deep rural Brittany. Wi-Fi calling is a good backup.

Food, Drink & Local Amenities

Where is the nearest supermarket?
The Super U in Saint-Nicolas-du-Pélem is really close by and has everything you could need for a self-catering stay. There is also a very handy small store right here in Lanrivain for daily essentials.
Are restaurants open all day in France?
Important warning: French restaurants strictly adhere to set service hours! Lunch is usually served only between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, and dinner from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. If you miss these windows, you will struggle to find hot food anywhere, so plan your ride stops accordingly.
What happens on French bank holidays (Jours Fériés)?
Be prepared! On bank holidays and Sundays, almost everything—supermarkets, small stores, and many restaurants—can be completely shut. Always stock up on food and drink the day before if a public holiday is coming up.
Do you provide breakfast or meals?
Our accommodation is self-catering, so you have full kitchens to prepare your own meals.
Is there a local boulangerie (bakery) for fresh bread?
Yes, there is a lovely local bakery nearby for your morning croissants and baguettes.
Can we cook outside?
Yes, we provide BBQ facilities. Grilling outside after a long ride is a Burlaouen tradition.
Can we buy beer or wine on site?
While we don't run a commercial bar, the local Super U has fantastic, cheap French wine and beer, and you are welcome to drink in the social barn in the evenings.

Ferries from the UK & Ireland

What is the best ferry port for Brittany?
Saint-Malo and Roscoff are the closest and most convenient ports. Both are an easy, highly scenic ride to Burlaouen.
How far is Burlaouen from Saint-Malo?
It is roughly a 2-hour ride (130 km) depending on which route you take.
How far is Burlaouen from Roscoff?
It is roughly a 1.5-hour ride (90 km). A very easy start to your holiday.
Can I sail into Caen, Cherbourg or Le Havre?
Yes. Caen is about 3.5 hours away, Cherbourg is 4 hours, and Le Havre is 4.5 hours. They are great options if you want a longer ride through Normandy on your way down.
What about Calais or Dunkirk?
Sailing to Calais is often cheaper, but it leaves you with a 6 to 7-hour motorway ride to reach us.
Do I have to tie my own motorcycle down on the ferry?
It depends on the operator. Brittany Ferries staff often help or provide the straps, but you are usually responsible for securing the bike. Always leave it on the side stand (not center stand) and leave it in gear.
When is the best time to book a ferry?
Book as early as possible, especially if you want a cabin on an overnight sailing during the summer.

The Channel Tunnel & Train Travel

Can I use the Eurotunnel (LeShuttle) with a motorcycle?
Yes. Motorcycles can board the Eurotunnel at Folkestone. The crossing to Calais takes just 35 minutes, making it the fastest way across the Channel.
How far is Burlaouen from the Calais Eurotunnel exit?
It is about 600 km (370 miles). If you take the A28 and A84 motorways, it takes roughly 6 to 7 hours of riding.
Do I have to strap my bike down on the Eurotunnel?
No. You simply park your bike on its side stand, put it in first gear, and stand next to it during the short journey.
Are Eurotunnel prices per person or per bike?
Tickets are priced per motorcycle, which includes the rider and a pillion passenger.
Is the ride from Calais to Brittany enjoyable?
The direct toll motorways are fast but not very scenic. Many bikers prefer to take two days, riding the coastal roads through Normandy before arriving at Burlaouen.
Can I put my motorcycle on a train in France?
France's official SNCF 'Auto-Train' service was unfortunately discontinued a few years ago.
Are there alternatives to the Auto-Train?
Yes, some private logistics companies offer truck or train transport if you want to fly down, though this is usually for much longer trips to Spain. For Brittany, riding from the port or tunnel is much easier!

Riding in France & Local Laws

Do I need to carry a breathalyzer in France?
No, the law requiring motorists to carry breathalyzers was scrapped. You no longer need one.
Do I need a CRIT'Air emissions sticker?
You only need a CRIT'Air sticker if you plan to ride into designated Low Emission Zones (ZFE) like Paris, Rennes, or Rouen. You don't need one for rural Brittany, but it's cheap and worth getting online before you travel just in case.
What are the speed limits in France?
Generally: 80 km/h on rural two-lane roads, 110 km/h on dual carriageways, 130 km/h on toll motorways, and 50 km/h in towns. Always watch for signs.
Do I need reflective stickers on my helmet?
French law states helmets should have reflective stickers on all four sides. While police rarely pull foreign riders over solely for this, it is technically the law.
Do I need a high-vis vest?
Yes. You must carry a high-vis vest (CE approved) under your seat or in a pannier. You only need to wear it in the event of a breakdown.
Do I need to carry spare bulbs?
It is highly recommended. If a light blows, police expect you to be able to replace it on the spot.
What documents must I carry?
You must carry your Passport, full Driving License, original V5C (logbook), and valid Motor Insurance certificate.
Do motorcycles pay tolls (Péages) in France?
Yes, but motorcycles pay significantly less than cars. However, most dual carriageways in Brittany are completely toll-free!
Do I need a UK sticker on my number plate?
Yes. If your plate doesn't have the Union Flag and 'UK' identifier, you must display a physical 'UK' sticker (the old 'GB' stickers are no longer valid).

Motorcycle Routes in Brittany

Are there good motorcycle roads near Burlaouen?
Central Brittany is incredible for riding. Sweeping rural D-roads, very little traffic, and great surfaces make it a biker's paradise.
What is the Lac de Guerlédan route?
A beautiful, twisty route around Brittany's largest lake, surrounded by forests and great cafes.
What are the Monts d'Arrée?
A rugged, hilly region of Brittany that feels almost like the Scottish Highlands or Dartmoor. The roads winding through it are spectacular.
Is Huelgoat worth a visit?
Absolutely. The forest roads leading to Huelgoat are great, and the town is famous for its giant mythological boulders.
Can we do a day trip to the coast?
Yes. The Pink Granite Coast to the north is a stunning day ride from Burlaouen.
Are the roads busy?
Outside of the major coastal tourist hotspots in August, the roads in Central Brittany are wonderfully quiet.
Are there speed cameras?
Yes, France has both fixed and average speed cameras. Radar detectors that pinpoint exact locations are illegal (though sat-navs showing 'danger zones' are fine).

Weather & Packing

What is the best time of year to visit?
May to September offer the best riding weather. June and September are often the sweet spots for warm weather and empty roads.
What is summer like in Brittany?
Summer is generally warm and pleasant (20-25°C), rarely reaching the unbearable extreme heat of Southern France, making it perfect for wearing bike gear.
Does it rain a lot?
Brittany has a maritime climate similar to Cornwall. You can get glorious sunshine, but you should always pack your waterproofs just in case!
What riding gear should I wear?
Textiles with removable liners or leathers with a good rain over-suit are ideal for Brittany's variable climate.
Should I bring a disc lock or heavy chain?
While Burlaouen is very secure, it's always smart to carry a disc lock for when you park in towns or at tourist sites during your day trips.
