Construction of the castle began around 1340 during the War of the Breton Succession (1341–1364), a period marked by political turmoil. It was commissioned by Étienne III Goyon, a member of the noble Goyon-Matignon family, to serve as a fortified residence .
Over the centuries, Fort La Latte witnessed several significant events. In 1379, it was captured by the renowned French commander Bertrand du Guesclin. The castle endured sieges by the English in 1490 and by the Catholic League in 1597, the latter resulting in substantial damage . Between 1690 and 1715, under the reign of Louis XIV, military engineer Siméon Garangeau, following Vauban’s designs, transformed the castle into a coastal fortress to defend Saint-Malo against English and Dutch naval threats .
After being decommissioned in 1890, the castle fell into neglect until it was classified as a historic monument in 1925. Restoration efforts commenced in 1931, and today, Fort La Latte is privately owned but open to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past .
The castle’s dramatic location and well-preserved architecture have made it a popular filming location, notably featuring in the 1958 film “The Vikings” starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curti.
